Bar Stools Sizes, Options and Quality
Bar Stool Selection
To select a Bar stool for your counter or bar can seem overwhelming. The choices of what height, style and materials to choose from are almost infinite. In general, bar stools come in 3 general heights; Counter height bar stools at 24"-26"; Bar height bar stools at 30" and oversized counter height bar stools at 34"-36".
To select the correct height for the bar stools that will work best for you, start by measuring from the top of the counter surface to the floor and then subtract 10" to 12". This will provide you with the most comfortable & appropriate bar stool height.
Other considerations are the height of the bar stool arms and how they will fit under the counter. (It is helpful to know bar stool seat arm height and style) You may also wonder how many will fit in a location- Typically a bar stool has a 2’ floor space requirement, per bar stool.
Most bar stools are constructed of wood (oak, maple, cherry, teak, alder), metal ( chrome, steel, aluminum) or a combination of both. Custom bar stools are available and can allow you to select the fabric, finish, wood or metal material, height and style to meet your needs. Two-tone fabrics, nail head treatments and kick plate finishes round out your ability to create a look that suits your décor.
The quality of a bar stool's construction and materials will dictate the longevity and comfort of your bar stools. Most domestic manufacturers have anywhere from 5-20 year warranty’s. If you plan on keeping you barstools for many years and will use them frequently, you are better served to purchase a domestic brand that will hold up over time. Many imported barstools will look similar to the quality domestics ones. These imported barstools may cost less in the short term but will have a much shorter lifespan from the domestic quality bar stool. The story is always the same. "You do get what you pay for".
The only true way to evaluate a bar stool is to see it in person, come down and sit in it to see if it is comfortable. The quality of the materials used, comfortability and general appeal can’t be gleaned from pictures. Each bar stool has it’s own dynamics that include how the chair supports your back, how you fit the chair, how is the seat padded and how do your legs fit to the foot rail support.
